VRContext: Virtual Reality for the Industry

Valuable tools for the Energy sector, including nuclear and conventional power plants
Nuclear plantWalkinside allows construction managers to enter and interact with the content of a full-scale nuclear power plant, including inaccessible and hazardous areas, which are faithfully represented in a 3D virtual environment. This enables step-by-step construction scheduling and installation sequences for piping assemblies, valves, and other equipment, as well as their subsequent maintenance.

Because the 3D virtual model is linked to databases with all the reference information, the model can be used for a walk-through or virtual reality evaluation. In the plant design phase, engineers, plant operators, and subcontractors can review accessibility in the general layout using immersive walk-through functions.

The simulation of equipment installation, replacement, or modification in an operating plant may be simulated for the entire installation path to determine whether obstacles must be removed and what optimization steps can be taken prior to initiating the project. Visual simulations support the rehearsal of various scenarios to test whether they could be dangerous.

Similarly, construction schedule simulations link planning information to 3D CAD models.

Walkinside can also serve as a tool for maintenance and operational activities, providing simulations for use by the owner-operator and contractors. The 3D virtual model enables welders, for example, to virtually ‘crawl’ under structures to determine whether they will be able to work effectively when they are on the actual site.

ProcessLife allows integration of radioactive processing software to track emissions during maintenance operations. In rehearsing operations management interventions, the user benefits from:
  • more realistic training metrics
  • operator awareness tools
  • planning solutions
VRcontext applications also support pre-planning, environmental impact studies, and construction of new hydropower plants with 3D flying animations that incorporate the future facility into the surrounding digital terrain model and enable interactive movement (walking, flying) in a realistic representation of the facilities, including the dam, the powerhouse, and the reservoir.
By clicking on an individual object, the user accesses databases containing all significant construction and operational information for that object.

Such simulations serve many purposes, including education of personnel, presentations to the public, planning for rescue operations, transport of equipment, emergency planning and navigation, facility repairs, project changes, and construction works.
